Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the name Nagi come from?

In Japanese, the word Nagi ( 凪 ) has a nuanced and poetic meaning:

  • Harmonize, calm, peaceful - to make or become calm and peaceful. A state of stillness where the wind has died down and the waves are calm.
  • Mix, Blend - a harmonious blending or the settling of different elements into a tranquil unity.

The term carries a peaceful and tranquil connotation and is sometimes used metaphorically to describe a calm period in life.

To us, that moment we sip on our matcha, is a moment of harmony and peace. That peaceful and calm state where the world just stands still for a minute.

All you need is matcha, water, and milk to make that harmonious cup and create that peaceful moment for yourself.

Why choose Nagi matcha?

When you choose Nagi you are not only being kind to the environment by supporting sustainable and ethical farming practices, you are also being kind to your body and tastebuds.

  • Organic
  • Nagi matcha is certified as organic under JAS, Japanese Agricultural Standards. This means that no synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are used in the entire process of making the matcha. Apart from that it ensures sustainable and ethical farming practices, minimizing environmental impact and contributing to the well-being of local communities.

  • From Uji, Japan
  • Nagi Matcha comes straight from Uji, the birthplace of Matcha. It is the most desired region for matcha in the world, renowned for its high quality matcha.

  • Single origin Saemidori cultivar
  • We use the single Saemidori cultivar for our Matcha. Saemidori is loved in the matcha world for its balanced light body and soft finish.

  • First flush harvest
  • First Flush means that it is the first harvest of the season. First flush matcha has a higher quality (flavour and nutrient wise) which is why it is also more expensive.

  • Flavour and finish
  • The harmony between the single origing Saemidori cultivar, first flush leaves and the nutritious soil and perfect Uji climate gives Nagi matcha its unique taste. A taste that is complex, umami, and sweet, with a subtle hint of bitterness. And let’s not forget that smooth, velvety finish.

  • Sustainable packaging
  • In order to keep the environmental footprint small, we prioritize eco-friendly practices throughout the process. That’s why Nagi is packaged in bio-degradable paper pouches.

    What quality is the matcha?

Nagi matcha is high quality ceremonial grade matcha. It's certified organic. It's produced in Uji, Japan. We only use first flush matcha (the best and freshest leaves with the most nutrients). We use a single origin cultivar. And our matcha is stone ground.

    Is Nagi matcha organic?

Yes. It's fully certified organic under Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS). The equivalent of the EU organic trademark.

How do I prepare a matcha?

How to create your Nagi ritual at home:

    • Use a bamboo spoon to sift 2g of matcha into a bowl.
    • Add 50ml of hot water (maximum 80°C) and whisk mindfully in a zigzag motion until it becomes frothy.
    • Pour matcha into a cup and add (foamed) milk to your liking.

PS: We love our matcha with coconut milk.

Mix it up. If you want to go iced, pour the frothy matcha into a cup with ice cubes and add cold milk to your liking.

And most importantly: take a moment to pause, sip, and appreciate the little wonders of life.

    Is there caffeine in matcha?

Yes there is caffeine in matcha. Between 19 and 44 mg per gram. Which is in general more caffeine compared to a gram of coffee. However, a cup of matcha has a lower caffeine content as you use less of it.

Moreover, as matcha contains the natural amino acid, L-theanine, the way your body absorbs the caffeine is different. Instead of getting a caffeine spike and that jittery feeling, that you get from coffee, your body gradually uses the caffeine in matcha over a longer period. So matcha gives you that sustained energy boost without the caffeine crash.

Is there sugar in Nagi Matcha?

Many commercial matcha products do have added sugar in there. So be careful to always check the ingredients.

Nagi matcha does not contain any added sugars. It's matcha at its purest form.

    Can I drink matcha daily?

Yes you can definitely drink matcha daily. It has so many amazing benefits for your body. Just remember that matcha does contain caffeine. So be mindful of that and see what feels good for you. Every body is different.

What is the best time to drink matcha?

That is totally up to your body, schedule and your preferences. We love our matcha in the morning as it provides us with that subtle energy and focus. But just see whatever works best for you. We do advise you to not drink matcha later in the afternoon or evening as it does still contain some caffeine. And you want to make sure the caffeine does not disrupt your sleep routine.

     Is matcha suitable for vegans?

Yes. Pure matcha is vegan. It is made out of 100% tea leaves, nothing else is added into it.

So your cup of Nagi is 100% vegan (depending on the milk you choose to make it of course).
