Caffeine

Matcha actually has a higher caffeine content per gram compared to a gram of coffee. Matcha contains between 18.9 and 44.4 mg/g, while a coffee bean contains around 10.0 to 12.0 mg/g (Kochman et al. (2020)). However, as you use less matcha powder, a cup of matcha contains less caffeine than a cup of coffee.

Caffeine in matcha is absorbed differently. Coffee often gives a jittery feeling and a caffeine crash a few hours later. The caffeine in matcha offers a slower, more sustained energy release that can last for hours, thanks to an amino acid called L-theanine.


L-theanine: Conscious energy and calm focus

Matcha contains L-theanine, which moderates caffeine absorption, allowing the body to process it slower, providing sustained energy without the jitters associated with coffee. It helps maintain focus and productivity throughout the day.

L-theanine also increases alpha brain waves, which can enhance calmness, creativity, and information absorption.
